Johnny Mercer is best known as a Tin Pan Alley lyricist, but he also composed music. He was a popular singer who recorded his own songs as well as songs written by others.

From the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s, many of the songs Mercer wrote and performed were among the most popular hits of the time. He wrote the lyrics to more than 1,500 songs, including compositions for movies and Broadway shows.

He received nineteen Academy Award nominations, and won four Best Original Song Oscars.

His songs will be celebrated by the Terence Collie quartet with Jane Parker (vocals) at the Riverside Arts Centre, 59, Thames Street on Sunday 14th July.

Many thanks to all of you who came to the Club’s inaugural Music Night with the Marshall Taylor Band and Blues Unlimited – it was very well attended and the collection for Shooting Star Children’s Hospice raised nearly £500, so it was a very worthwhile and fun event.

The next Music Night at the Club is on Friday 21st June when we welcome back THE 60s ALL STARS for what has become a regular summer party night. The band played at our very first Music Night eight years ago and have always been one of our most popular attractions, so we are always delighted to have them back.

The band comprises Mick Avory, the original and long-time drummer with the Kinks, Alan Lovell from the Swinging Blue Jeans and John Dee of The Foundations, and often with the added bonus of Hollies keyboard player Ian Parker, they are one of the best revival bands around.  We know that a hugely entertaining evening of wall-to-wall Sixties and rock ‘n’ roll classics is absolutely guaranteed. Pass the word around and bring your friends – it’s always a fun night and it will be a great way to celebrate the summer solstice, for the Druids amongst you.

We look forward to seeing you there. Food will be available as usual from about 7.

To raise money for the Amateur Club (LIARFC) the Club will be hosting its second beer festival following last year’s success.

This year they will be aiming a little bit bigger with more external food and drink stalls to offer a wide range of street food and snacks; and alternatives to real ale. Live music will be provided throughout by four excellent bands.

This includes the publishing of a formal notice in a local newspaper; street notices being erected on site at each location; plus drawings and a statement of reasons being available to view at each library across the borough, and also at Spelthorne Borough Council offices. Those properties immediately fronting locations where changes are proposed will be notified individually by letter.

Further to the article posted on this site on 29^th April, there is now just one day left to respond to this consultation.

Reponses must be submitted by close of play on Tuesday 4^th June. “The Local Green Space designation was introduced by the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in March 2012 which offers a high degree of protection to areas of importance to the local community.  This is on the basis that the land meets certain criteria to achieve the designation.” (Para 1.4). “The Local Green Space designation was introduced by the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in March 2012 which offers a high degree of protection to areas of importance to the local community.  This is on the basis that the land meets certain criteria to achieve the designation.” (para.1.6).  

Our comments may be summarised as follows:

• We believe that a total score of at least 13 out of the 25 available sets the bar too high. After all, “There has been no standard methodology produced by the Government against which the areas proposed to be designated as Local Green Space are assessed.” (Para. 2.1) If uniformly applied we would expect these sites, amongst others, to be vulnerable to exclusion:
  • Flower Pot Green
  • Cedars Recreation Ground, Green Street 
  • Hawke Park (Former Line of Lower Sunbury Relief Road TP26)
  • Belgrave Road/Batavia Road
  • Lime Crescent
• Furthermore, the burden of proof is on local residents to evidence “observed wildlife” or “frequent” recreational use by the community in order to qualify for protection as a local green space. How is this evidence to be acquired?
• Para. 3.9 “The minimum threshold proposed is any area below 0.25 hectares (0.6 acres) would not be designated. This represents the size of an area which can accommodate approximately one residential unit.” We disagree with this assessment. 0.25 of a hectare would allow for up to 12 residential units.
