Crash at Sunbury Cross Roundabout - Subway Closed

Rate this item

The Sunbury Cross Subway has been closed to pedestriansThe Sunbury Cross Subway has been closed to pedestrians as result of damage caused by a vehicle collision late last week. An uninsured and unroadworthy (no MOT) skip lorry suffered brake failure and went across the roundabout dramatically damaging the control boxes, ripping out the electricity supply and telemetry so essential to the operation of the subway pumps. It was fortunate that there were no personal injuries as the control box ended up down in the subway.

The subway is below ground water level and, to facilitate pedestrian passage, the pumps should work continuously. Pump Services were immediately called out but cannot repair the extensive damage for another 10 days as the parts are not immediately available. An attempt was made over the weekend to use a pump truck, under a lane closure on the roundabout, but the knee-height level of water together with the rainfall meant that this had to be stopped. The subway is therefore not currently safe for pedestrian use.

Today I rang the specified: 03002001003 number. After an assertive forceful asking session, when he said he didn't know. 'When' was my only question. Finally got across I was not going to stop asking 'when'. He left me hanging again and came back with: Pumped out on nightshift on 28th/29th August. He had no knowledge that it may need disinfecting or cleaning also! We'll have to see now.

I both live and work in Sunbury and every day I have to listen to people from outside I work with tell me that my local council could not organise a knees-up in a brewery - I mean come on, how long will it take to get this fixed, it is an embarassment, a disgrace and once the schools re-open, it will only be a matter of time before we have a child fatality crossing the roundabout - get this sorted now !

    Could somebody please clarify:

    1. When is the repair actually going to happen? We are now weeks beyond the "10 days" mentioned in the original article.

    2. What exactly is the official "safe alternative" route for pedestrians that the Council's unhelpful signage refers to, without any actual detail?

The whole thing is an absolute disgrace.

Yes when, when , why, why so long does anybody know. I am 50 and I feel a real panic attack coming every time I attempt to cross. Though even from Green Street to get to M & S I found out one has to cross in anti-clockwise circuit: or take the bus! for me it is two stops #RIDICULOUS . Could the council get sued if a child gets injured? . It need permanent crossing on one of the slip roads at least, like at Apex cornerA316.

When is the subway going to be reopened to the public? Its been weeks now. It is now only a few feet away from the ceiling inside the subway ! The school kids all go back in less than two weeks. The council will have worse on their hands if its not reopened and a kid gets injured trying to cross the busy roads! Think about it if you dare.

The subway will surely have to be deep cleaned after it had been pumped out as it will stink and goodness knows what Bactria are growing in that water?!

You think its a good thing the lights were out....I think it's a good thing it happened during the school holidays.....It was far, far worse when there were no lights on the Cross. It used get gridlocked at rush hour on most days.

Many Thanks to this website, I finally found out about the details of the subway and the crash and why. I am a new resident(of two years)to Sunbury, and also a lifelong pedestrian. I couldn't find out anything from the council or library. I feel it is worth a few complaints, and am encouraging this, please. The metal barriers make it impossible to use 'safe alternative crossing' as the signs say!

Everyone is noticing how much more fluid the traffic now is at the roundabout now the lights are out of action. It just goes to show that traffic lights are a hindrance on roundabouts, and more than likely part of a conspiracy to cause unnecessary chaos. The traffic got a lot worse when lights were installed at various roundabouts further up the A316 in Whitton and Twickenham.

I agree Mike. I went through 270 degrees at the Cross yesterday morning at 8.30 and it was a breeze.

It is so nice not to have to wait at all those red light phases. Hope they take a long time to get the lights working again.
