Pensioners Still in the Scammers' Sights

Rate this item
(2 votes)

The scam drawn to your attention in December is sill doing the rounds. The intended target gets a recorded message saying he/she is due an immediate pension bonus and, as the case is urgent, the target must immediately respond by pressing 5 or sometimes a 9 on the phone's keypad.

Trading standards officers are aware of this scam and say: "The scammers are telephoning and may well say they are from the Pension Helpline and claim that you are due a £1,000 bonus. Callers may even be able to provide you with some personal information such as name and address. Protect yourself and never provide any personal information to these callers or any cold caller."

This scam is aimed at pensioners, but there may well be variations aimed at other age groups.

Cold Calling Doorstep Traders

1. Drainage Scams in the Epsom area.

On one occasion the trader claimed to be from the Council and offered to fix blocked drains.

Another time the trader (possibly a different one) got 'his boss' to phone the resident and then demanded £1000 up front so that they could hire the correct equipment to clear the drain blockage.

2. Roof work in the Woking area

We have had reports that residents are being subjected to cold calls from tradesmen offering to undertake roofing work in order to make their home more energy efficient.

As always our advice is to say NO to doorstep traders.

Do not invite them in or offer to buy products at the door as they can be very persuasive! Try using our No Cold Calling Sticker to deter them and to remind yourself to say NO to doorstep callers!

Scams

1. Council Tax Refund?

Surrey residents are being targeted by a company telling them that they might be able to get a refund on their council tax.

Of course in doing this there is financial gain for the company!

Residents can contact their local council to challenge their council tax banding if they think it might be wrong. The process is simple and completely free and you do not need to employ anyone to do it for you. However, challenging a banding carries a health warning as it can be recalculated up as well as down.

2. The Football Association warns of a "trial scam"

Fraudsters purporting to be licensed agents and football club employees are sending out letters and spam emails promising trials with various clubs. The FA says that the football clubs and agents whose names have been used have nothing to do with the scam.

The scam works by promising trials to young players with various clubs and asks for an advance payment to cover "insurance and travel".

Recalls

1. Kitchen Utensils sold at Argos Catalogue number 842/4657

It has been identified that some of the items included in the above sets contain levels of certain chemicals called Primary Aromatic Amines, which exceed those permitted for use in products that come into contact with food.

If you have bought this product, please return it to your nearest store for a full refund or alternatively please call customer services on the following number: 0845 640 2020.

2. Co-op Chicken Nuggets - The Co-operative is recalling two batch codes of its own-brand Breaded Chicken Nuggets (425g) with a 'best before' date of October 2013, because plastic has been found in some of the bpackets. The Batch codes are: L2288 6B and L2288 6C
