As with any other local neighbourhood, the policies and actions which affect the character and future of Lower Sunbury are generally framed and implemented by a combination of local and national government, along with the vested interests and market forces which operate within those frameworks. Lower Sunbury is by no means unique in being under threat from a creaking infrastructure brought about by rapid urban development, the growth of traffic, and other pressures affecting the quality of life and the character of the area.
Working with the local authorities, we see it as the responsibility of residents’ and amenity groups such as LOSRA to address the underlying issues which fundamentally affect their members’ lives, as well as the minutiae of everyday life with which such groups are often concerned.

There is a special free charity ‘live’ music event at Sunbury Cricket Club on Thursday 28th December at 8pm, in aid of the local Shooting Star Chase charity. This features two excellent local ‘live’ bands – The Marshall Taylor Band and KT66, both playing rock and pop covers.
Admission is free but donations during the evening in aid of The Shooting Star Chase children’s hospice charity would be welcome and much appreciated. The bar will be open as normal.
This is not one of the Cricket Club’s regular Music Night promotions, but the bands are close associates of the Music Nights.
There is more information about the bands, along a short medley of live tracks at:

The final Music Night of the year at Sunbury Cricket Club is on Friday 8th December when the Club aims to have another party night of rhythm & blues and rock ‘n’ roll when the Club welcomes for the first time guitarist and singer JOE JAMMER with his Chicago Rhythm & Blues Revue.
Chicago-born Joe ran blues sessions at Buddy Guy’s Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago before becoming roadie and guitar technician for Led Zeppelin, and he first came to London in 1970 at the invitation of Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page when he made an album for EMI soon afterwards, and then joined Paladin, followed by Maggie Bell’s Band before becoming a founder member of funk band Olympic Runners with Pete Wingfield and George Chandler - he is one of the most sampled guitarists of all time based on his work with the band. He played on albums for Ringo Starr, Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, Supertramp and others as well as touring with some of the top names in blues, including playing with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
After returning to the USA and Canada for 20 years or so, he settled back in the UK several years ago, becoming something of a rock and blues troubadour over recent years, gigging regularly with his rock ‘n’ roll band as well as doing shows at venues like the Eel Pie Club and Half Moon Putney with his All-Star Chicago Rhythm & Blues Revue, re-creating the music and atmosphere of the sessions that he used to run at the Checkerboard Lounge. Joe is a great showman and it will be a rollicking evening of blues, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll for the final Music Night before Christmas, so come along and help the Club round off the year in style. There’s a wealth of info about Joe’s colourful career at www.joejammer.com.

Thanks to all those who submitted objections to the proposed development at 126 Green Street (see article of 16/10/17). The concerns of residents have resulted in the application being refused and are reflected in the grounds for the planning officer’s refusal:
“The proposed development by virtue of its design, siting and scale on this prominent corner location, would represent an overdevelopment of the site with a lack of car parking, amenity space and cramped layout. It would be positioned forward of the prevailing building line of adjacent sites and would appear visually obtrusive and out of keeping with the locality. It would not make a positive contribution to the street scene of Manor Lane and Green Street and would not preserve the setting of the neighbouring listed building at no. 124 Green Street, to the detriment of the character of the area. The development will therefore be contrary to Policies EN1 and EN5 of the Core Strategy and Policies DPD 2009 and the Supplementary Planning Document on the Design of Residential Extensions and New Residential Development”
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the re-development scheme proposed for Inglewood Hall which has just been approved (see article of 23/10/17).
Local residents will doubtless be dismayed by this decision, not least because the County Highways Authority did not support their concerns regarding the lack of parking spaces as specified by planning law.
Whilst too late for this application, the Association has nevertheless submitted a number of questions for written reply at the next Joint Area Committee (SCC & Spelthorne) on 6th December.
The Christmas market will once more come to Lower Sunbury this year on 7th December and will feature lots of stalls, gifts, carol singing with the Salvation Army and a Santa’s grotto. There will also be a community raffle with tickets on sale in Van Wonderen, Laura’s Hair salon, Tony’s Hairdressers and Skinners post office.
The next Music Night at Sunbury Cricket Club falls on Friday 24th November when the Club kicks off the festive season unusually early as they welcome back THE MERSEY LEGENDS. They normally do the Club’s last show before Christmas, but their availability and the Club availability didn't match in December, so they will be coming in November this year. It's Thanksgiving Day in the USA on the previous day, and Black Friday for the retail industry, so we can safely have an early Christmas rave-up.
The Mersey Legends are led by Yanni, born in Liverpool and who played at The Cavern with his band The Seftons in the heyday of the beat boom – the band were top of the bill when the Cavern re-opened in 1967. He has been true to his Liverpool roots ever since, creating a band and a brilliantly honed act specifically designed to celebrate the great sounds of the Mersey Era. As ever, we will be guaranteed a rip-roaring evening of wall-to-wall Mersey Era classics just like we’ve had for the last four years. There’s more info at www.themerseylegends.co.uk.
8.30pm, £7.50 at the door. Food will be available as usual, so we look forward to seeing you.
Due to the imminent departure of its current incumbent, the RAC is looking for a volunteer replacement treasurer.

This Association has received a number of emails from residents concerned with the recent upsurge in disorderly behaviour and criminal damage by youths on scooters and mopeds congregating in car parks and other public spaces within Lower Sunbury. Indeed, this phenomenon has also been reported in the most recent issue of Sunbury Matters: click to see.
Our local police who have been made aware of this problem and also the spike in residential burglaries are doing their best within their very limited resources. Indeed, The Police and Crime Commissioner, David Munro, has written to all MPs and Council Leaders in Surrey to seek their support in abolishing the current cap on the policing element of the council tax. In his letter, Mr Munro says “Like many forces up and down the country, Surrey Police are currently running at the limit of their capabilities at a time when demand on the service continues to grow.”
If you have concerns about your neighbourhood and would like to have your say, why not come to the Spelthorne Police and Partnership Meeting on 29th November at the Staines Community Centre.
