Following last year’s successful and popular Older Persons’ Safety Day, Spelthorne Council is organising another event, on October 19 at the Orangery at Shepperton Studios.

The day will feature presentations on issues of safety and security including bogus callers and online scams.

A pharmacist will talk about all the different services available from the service.

See the attached flier for details and how to book. Transport is provided from local pick-up points.

Please share with any older people who might be interested in coming along; for example Good Neighbour scheme users, fellow residents, club members and so on.

Bookings are on a first come, first served basis.

Spelthorne Council announces that its efforts to create a clean, green and colourful borough were recognised at this year’s prestigious South & South East in Bloom Awards.  At the awards, held in Fareham on 14 September, Spelthorne Council beat off competition from hundreds of entrants to pick up three awards. 

The ever-popular Sunbury Walled Garden claimed the top-spot, receiving a Gold award and being declared overall winner in the Small Park category for the fourth year running. 

There was more good news for Spelthorne with Staines and Sunbury Cemeteries both gaining Silver Gilt awards in the Best Cemetery category.

The annual competition is designed to encourage councils, residents and businesses to work together to improve the local environment and make towns and cities greener and cleaner. Expert judges toured the region in June and July and awarded marks based on a range of criteria.

American born alto saxophonist, Allison Neale’s beautifully crafted lines evoke the spirit of Paul Desmond and Art Pepper with whom she has a particular affinity.

As a strong advocate of the melodic West Coast style she has performed alongside leading international artists such as Adelaide Hall and Bud Shank; and more recently tenorist Scott Hamilton as well as featuring in both the John Dankworth ‘Generations‘ Band and the “Back to Basie’ Orchestra. She frequently tours the UK with her own Quartet but on this occasion will be accompanied by Terrence Collie, piano; Richard Sadler, bass; Emiliano Caroselli, drums. Her latest CD " I Wished on the Moon " was released in January 2015 on the Trio Records label and features the quartet as well as Milt Jackson influenced vibraphonist Nat Steele.

Surrey County Council has launched a consultation giving residents and businesses the chance to have their say on the vision for the new Surrey Waste Local Plan. The new plan will make sure enough land is available so that facilities can be built to manage the waste Surrey households and businesses produce, in the most sustainable way.

To raise awareness of the consultation and to ensure residents have the chance to have their say, SCC have asked LOSRA to give it publicity.

The consultation will run until 25th November and residents can have their say by completing the questionnaire online at surreycc.gov.uk/newwasteplann or can request a copy by calling 0300 200 1003.

We are grateful to all those who completed a recent survey on bus services within the County.

Despite spirited opposition, it will be seen that, amongst others, the 555 Heathrow-Hersham and 556/557 Woking-Chertsey/Sunbury services are to be withdrawn.

Designed for the over-50s, this nine-day event promotes some of the activities and services aimed at helping older adults improve their health.

Leading a healthier, more active lifestyle doesn't necessarily mean going to the gym - it could be brisk walking, line dancing, Tai Chi or bowls. There really is something for everyone.

As part of the event, Spelthorne’s Community Centres are offering the chance for all new visitors to try one free activity from 26-30 September and giving away free goody bags on their weekend taster days (provided by Sainsbury's and Waitrose). Activities are also taking place at the Spelthorne and Sunbury Leisure Centres and at various other locations in the Borough.

An application by the developers, Crest Nicholson, as an addendum to the approved scheme for Park Avenue, has been lodged with the Council. In their design and access statement the company states:"Following considered evaluation of current and anticipated market conditions and demand within the context of the Park Avenue development as proposed and the surrounding local area, it is felt that the area fronting the entrance green which previously proposed the addition of four large 3-storey, 5-bedroom villas (plots 52-55) would be better served by a single 3-storey centrepiece appartment building.... Parking provision for the proposed building meets the local authorities parking standards and provides a total of 36 parking spaces of which 24 are allocated. Additionally the 4 unallocated spaces on the adjacent street have been retained."

The developers intend to meet their affordable housing obligation based upon the precedents set by the previous consent and the viability work undertaken previously. It is proposed that the 35% proportion of affordable housing agreed in regard to the implemented consent be mirrored in this application. Based upon a net gain of 20 additional dwellings, this would require a contribution toward seven off-site dwellings of £335,125.

The annual Picnic in the Park run by the Friends of the Sunbury Embroidery will be held on Saturday 10th September. The event will feature Music Night favourites, The 60s All Stars - the Friends fancied a change from the orchestral music that's been the norm at past events.

For those of you who've never been, the Picnic in the Park takes place in the beautiful surroundings of the Walled Garden in Thames Street where the Gallery is situated and it's really an atmospheric event where you can bring your tables, chairs, picnic, drinks and whatever else (candelabra have been spotted on several tables); and enjoy the music as the dusk falls.

Gates open around 6pm with music from 7pm. Tickets may be purchased at the Gallery for £12.50 in advance or £15 on the night and funds raised by the event support the work of the Gallery.
