New Charges for Disposals at Charlton Lane Community Recycling Centre

If you’re planning any DIY or building work at home or in your garden, make sure you find out about new charges being introduced for some non-household waste at the nine CRCs (community recycling centres) which accept it.

The new charges will come in from 1 September, and apply to waste from construction, alterations or repair of your home or garden, such as plasterboard, breeze blocks, bricks, rubble and soil. Tyres from cars and motorbikes will also be subject to a charge.

Here are some more details about what you will and won’t need to pay for, and how much the charges will be:

  • Non-household waste in bags no bigger than 50cm x 77cm will be charged at £4 a bag.
  • Sheets of plasterboard no bigger than 120cm x 240cm will be charged at £4 per sheet.
  • Items such as concrete fence post, ceramic bath, cistern and paving slab will be charged at £4 per item.
  • If the material is loose, a charge of £50 will apply per car load.
  • A charge of £5 will apply for tyres from cars and motorbikes.
  • Bicycle tyres will be free of charge.
  • There will be a free daily allowance of chargeable waste of one bag or one item or one sheet of plasterboard per household.
  • Charges can be paid by credit or debit card.

Increased demand for essential services, coupled with reduced government funding, means Surrey County Council needs to reduce its spending in other areas, including its CRCs.

A full list of the types of waste that will be charged for is available at surreycc.gov.uk/recycling.

We can only hope that the new charges will not increase the incidence of fly-tipping!

I recently disposed of a basin (2 items - bowl and pedestal) and a toilet (counted as 3 items! - bowl, cistern and cistern lid). I was surprised to be charged £16 altogether. Later, when I had to dump 7 bags of rubble, I brought one per day to Charlton for a week, (thereby helping to clog the roads) instead of paying 6x£4. I would not reward those idiots by allowing them to appear to be generating income from their idiotic policies.

It is crazy. The council are responsible for recycling waste from houses in the borough. If you can identify yourself as being local then you should be able to bring any kind of waste for recycling, whether it arises from day to day living or home improvements. It is inevitable that charging ridiculous amounts for disposal of certain items will result in fly-tipping. When the poster of the original article says "We can only hope that the new charges will not increase the incidence of fly-tipping!" I sense that they are as exasperated as anyone in having to support such a foolish policy.

It seems to me that the amount of rubble disposed of at Charlton Lane is tiny compared to all the other rubbish. Will it not result in more savings if people bring all their waste to the dump? Rather than have unscrupulous residents offload it all in some back road, wait for some aggrieved citizen to report it, so that the council can organise transport to go and fetch it and dump it at the recycling centre anyway?

Just returned from 8 mile, 1 hr in traffic road trip from Weybridge to find out this new rule, to be told I could only dump one of my three bags of old house bricks. Or pay £8 for the other two, I asked where does this state this at the dump (their are no signs showing this information) and was told to look online. The skip i put it into was empty and now have to make more single trips to get a small job done. Why should we pay more when we pay the highest council tax in the UK. Like posted above, surely this will only lead to people fly tipping, dumping it in their house hold bins and not recycling correctly. Very disappointing.

I've just returned from the dump totally incensed. I wanted to dispose of a toilet but was told I'd have to pay £5. When I enquired why I was informed a toilet is 2 items and I can only dump one of them for free per day. I protested that a toilet is one item. You can only buy a pan and cistern together. I'm not doing home renovations- simply my cistern cracked and I needed to replace it. I made the point that people could easily just dump their rubbish for free which is not environmentally friendly. I'm so made, I find this crazy. Grrrrr

I'm very disappointed to hear that you are charging outrageous fees for recycling rubbish. I don't go very often to the recycling depot but I will be thinking of finding other ways of disposing it. I agree with the previous comments it will be a false economy as people will not be encouraged to recycle. I would happily pay £5 or even £10 per vehicle (private not commercial). It will encouraged people to bring full vehicles which mean less journeys which must be more environmentally friendly as they will use less fuel. The councils greed will not be cost effective!!! It will cost them more in clearing rubbish from fly tipping. It will leave them with less funds to put towards other projects. YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE !!! ?

It's already started; dumped carpet on the pavement and a bath in all its glory together with a handy hammer for the local troublemakers. All at the corner of Beverley Road.

I can't help thinking that this is one of those false economies where the council ends up spending more on clearing up fly-tipping than they recoup from the charges.

These are ridiculous charges and are effectively just increasing our council taxes through the back door. In addition, it will certainly cause fly tipping to increase from those who might perhaps would have gone to the tip otherwise. I will now probably have to pay for waste disposal companies to clear up my DIY and garden waste from home projects in the future so I am not happy.
