Like any local community, the policies and decisions shaping the character and future of Lower Sunbury are influenced by a combination of local and national government initiatives, alongside market forces and vested interests operating within these frameworks. As with many areas, Lower Sunbury faces challenges stemming from an aging infrastructure, rapid urban development, increasing traffic congestion, and other pressures that impact both quality of life and the distinctive character of the neighbourhood.
In collaboration with local authorities, other residents’ associations and amenity groups, LOSRA plays a vital role in addressing fundamental issues that affect its members' lives. This organisation not only engages with broader strategic concerns but also focuses on the everyday matters that shape community well-being.

Farmers' Market to return to Sunbury on 14th May and 18th June
Following the success of the first farmers market last month, the organisers will be bringing the Market back to Sunbury Cross again on Monday 14th May and 18th June. If it continues to be a success we can expect the Market to become a regular feature of the shopping calendar.

LOSRA OBLIGED TO COMPLAIN TO LOCAL CANDIDATE ABOUT CLAIM IN ELECTION LEAFLET
We need to draw to your attention an issue relating to the forthcoming local elections. We were very surprised to see in the election literature circulated by the Conservatives in the Sunbury East ward a claim that candidate Adam Shire “most recently published an article in the December 2010 Lower Sunbury Residents Association newsletter”.
As you know, LOSRA is an apolitical organisation – our constitution sets this out very clearly. We have never provided a platform for political parties, and no article by Mr. Shire has appeared in a LOSRA newsletter. We wrote to Mr. Shire asking for an explanation, since we felt that it was potentially damaging to our reputation if residents felt that our impartiality had been compromised, and pointed out that, contrary to advice in the official “Guidance for Candidates” publication, he had not sought our permission before using LOSRA’s name in the leaflet.
More to the point we were concerned that, given LOSRA’s reputation and profile in the area, there was a possibility that some residents might be persuaded to vote for a candidate who appeared to enjoy some kind of special relationship with LOSRA, and that the election process might be compromised. We put this to Spelthorne’s Chief Executive, Roberto Tambini, who immediately consulted the Electoral Commission, who advised that there was no action that the authority could or should take. We are grateful to Mr. Tambini for researching the matter so speedily.
We have now, a week after the original complaint, received an apology from Mr. Shire for using our name without permission, although no explanation of the original statement has been offered. We had asked Mr. Shire to take steps to inform the electorate that the statement in the election leaflet was inaccurate, but have received no assurances in this regard. We therefore felt that, given the shortness of time before the election, we should let as many people as possible know the facts of this matter via our web site and e-bulletin.
Mayor of Spelthorne's XI v Mayor of Haringey's XI
Mayor of Spelthorne's XI v Mayor of Haringey's XI - In Aid of Charity - Sunbury Cricket Club Monday 2nd May at 1:00pm
The match will take place in support of the Mayor of Spelthorne's charities, Daybreak Respite Care, Staines Brass Band and Midas Plus which supports charities throughout Spelthorne.
The Mayor of Haringey's XI will be accompanied by a steel band.
The 25 over match will start at 1:00pm. The Mayor of Spelthorne's XI will be captained by Sunbury CC's U17 Player, Matt Nichols.
St Mary's Church Fair - 7th MAY, 2011 - 10.30am to 2.00pm
Please come along and support the fundraising efforts to patch the hole in the Church roof before parishioners need to get the buckets out to catch the rain!
There will be a variety of stalls from Fairtrade to Jewellery and Books to Bric-a-Brac. There is sure to be something for everyone from the very young to the very young at heart. As always there will be hot and cold refreshments to cheer you as you browse. Don't miss the ever popular plant stall or the chance to win something lovely on the Tombola. We have excellent Raffle prizes this year to tempt you.

An Evening of Fun on Royal Wedding Day
If you haven't made arrangements for the evening of the Royal Wedding, why not make your way down to Sunbury Cricket Club for a programme of music and fun. The event is being put on by the Club together with The Manor Players and Shepperton Players; and all proceeds will go to these groups who, with their great local performers provide us with so much entertainment throughout the year. Sunbury Cricket Club Open Day This Sunday 17th April
Sunbury Cricket Club is holding another Open Day. This year it is on Sunday 17th April to welcome prospective Colts, Adult Players and those interested in non playing membership. It is hoped that numbers will exceed the 300 adults and children who turned up for a fun afternoon in 2010.
Prospective colts in the U5 – U9 age groups will be invited to join in practice sessions and games as appropriate for the different age groups. Older age groups will have the opportunity to use the Club nets (no studs allowed). It is not necessary to have any cricket kit. Prospective colts must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We shall also have kit samples for sizing on the day and Committee Members on hand to answer questions.

Crime on The River, Notice to Boat Owners
Surrey Police have just issued the following crime alert to boat owners on the River:
Overnight on the 11th/12th April 2011 a number of thefts where property was stolen, and attempted thefts, from motor boats took place on the River in the Shepperton area. It is believed that a boat was used to approach other moored vessels and the stolen property was taken away and probably landed elsewhere.
If you have a boat moored on the river please could you secure it as much is possible and should anyone see any suspicious activity either on the river or the riverbank or have any information which may assist please do not hesitate to call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 or 999 in case of emergency.
A New Season of Music & Entertainment at Sunbury Cricket Club
Sunbury Sports Association is expanding its activities with a new season of music and entertainment events in the clubhouse of what most you will know best as Sunbury Cricket Club in Lower Hampton Road. Here are details of the first two events. These are open to all, not just members of the Club, and we would look forward to seeing you there.
Thursday 21st April - THE 60s ALL STARS
A fantastic evening of classic sixties music and rock 'n' roll provided by four guys whose careers go back to those heady days. They are Alan Lovell (Swinging Blue Jeans), Mick Avory (The Kinks), John Dee (The Foundations), Del Mandel (Crispian St. Peters/George Harrison). 8.00 p.m. onwards. Friday 29th April 7.30pm - HIT FOR SIX
An evening of comedy. Round off the Royal Wedding Day with an evening of original comedy sketches performed by members of popular local drama groups Manor Players and Shepperton Players
Performers include award-winning local favourites Eric Champion, Ellie Roper, Robert Hardy, Olwyn Holme, Lorna Doyle, Sue Dye, Jo Stockbridge, Adam Pollington, Nigel Smith and professional comedienne Debra-Jane Appleby. The show is directed Riverside Arts Centre's Geoff Buckingham (also one of our Club members) and Carmen Souchet. It will have some risque moments and maybe a hint of innuendo, but will be suitable for all the family! Music from 7.30pm, show starts at 8pm.

London Irish Applications; LOSRA Submits its Statement of Case
Residents who have received our Spring newsletter, or viewed it on line, will by now know that the Public Inquiry to determine the appeals by London Irish will be held on 7th June at the Council Chamber. In preparation for this hearing, LOSRA is required to submit its 'Statement of Case'. This document represents a preliminary step towards the next phase, the submission of proofs of evidence and all supporting documents by the beginning of next month.
The purpose of this article is twofold: to remind you of the important public meeting to be held on Thursday 12th May at St.Mary's Village Hall at 8.30pm; and to ask you to view the statement of case by clicking here.
Another Clean-up Opportunity at Sunbury Lock Thursday 21st April
Thanks to the support of local resident volunteers, a great deal was achieved in the clean-up of Sunbury Lock island on 12th March (See article dated 4th March). Over 20 bags of (some unmentionable) rubbish, discarded traffic cones, and other detritus were removed from this beautiful nature reserve.
More work still needs to be done however and a second clean-up operation is planned for Thursday 21st April. If you are available, and can spare the time, do please join Thames 21 for what will prove to be an enjoyable and very worthwhile few hours.
Food Waste Collections Coming in the Autumn
The Council will be introducing Borough-wide waste food collections in the autumn.

PC Caroline Barnes has sent LOSRA her Policing Report for March 2011.
As recently reported in the Surrey Herald, the car park at Fordbridge Road continues to be a source of late night disturbance to residents living close by.
