The O&S committee voted last evening to recommend to Cabinet that the hoardings surrounding the Lendy Lion should be immediately removed. It is now up to the Cabinet to decide - they next meet on 27 Jan.
Regretfully, however, that is not the end of the story. On a second vote last evening, the O&S committee voted to leave this whole issue open-ended by endorsing, in advance, future research to be conducted by two academics from Brunel University. Councillors will say that they will not be bound by what these two academics produce, but - if thy believe that - I have a bridge to sell them. Two of our local ward councillors abstained on this motion (Cllrs Richard Dunn and Tom Fidler), and one voted for this motion (Cllr Nicholls).
I fear that they have just signed the notice for the eventual demolition of the Memorial, because they have just voted to have the future of the Memorial taken out of local hands and decided by outsiders. It is our Memorial, and we should decide.

Our grand daughter cried when she saw the LIon walled up like that. Why are councillors allowing council bureaucrats who don't represent us to carry out any such action in our name? You don't b negotiate with terrorists, why with these self appointed trouble makers? The people of Sunbury don't want this. Why comply with the baseless and mindless activism of minorities, who are not even taxpayers of Spelthorne or users of the Walled Garden. This is simply mindless and spineless knee bending to extremist vandal minorities, who want to impose their narrow and ignorant view of the world on the majority by criminality. So officers choose to negotiate with them in our name in the context of threats of criminality if they don't. Really? In a democracy? I'd rather pay for CCTV, movement triggered security and expect vigorous Police action against any vandalism.

Stop pandering to the permanently offended and snowflakes that blight society. Was never a problem until they blindly followed like all the other sheep and made something from nothing. Remove the statue and you’re as bad as those mentioned herein. Leave alone...

Please leave Lendy and all other statues to protect history for future generations. Ifs madness to remove the lion. Its not a statue of someone is it. If you had a dog of cat or bird instead how does that relate to slavery. Utter stupidity

When the proposed fate of the Lendy Lion first appeared there was also a statement declaring that the houses in Lendy Place should be "demolished brick by brick". The writer was clearly oblivious that Lendy Place is a recent development by Linden Homes on the former Police College site and the only association Lendy Place has with history is in name only.

On Monday 18th January 2021 the Government is planning new laws to protect statues in England from being removed "on a whim or at the behest of a baying mob", Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick has said. Source:https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55693020

Why is anyone still even considering its removal? These young men were not even born when slavery was abolished, even supposing that a connection would justify it.
