New Charges for Disposals at Charlton Lane Community Recycling Centre

If you’re planning any DIY or building work at home or in your garden, make sure you find out about new charges being introduced for some non-household waste at the nine CRCs (community recycling centres) which accept it.

The new charges will come in from 1 September, and apply to waste from construction, alterations or repair of your home or garden, such as plasterboard, breeze blocks, bricks, rubble and soil. Tyres from cars and motorbikes will also be subject to a charge.

Here are some more details about what you will and won’t need to pay for, and how much the charges will be:

  • Non-household waste in bags no bigger than 50cm x 77cm will be charged at £4 a bag.
  • Sheets of plasterboard no bigger than 120cm x 240cm will be charged at £4 per sheet.
  • Items such as concrete fence post, ceramic bath, cistern and paving slab will be charged at £4 per item.
  • If the material is loose, a charge of £50 will apply per car load.
  • A charge of £5 will apply for tyres from cars and motorbikes.
  • Bicycle tyres will be free of charge.
  • There will be a free daily allowance of chargeable waste of one bag or one item or one sheet of plasterboard per household.
  • Charges can be paid by credit or debit card.

Increased demand for essential services, coupled with reduced government funding, means Surrey County Council needs to reduce its spending in other areas, including its CRCs.

A full list of the types of waste that will be charged for is available at surreycc.gov.uk/recycling.

We can only hope that the new charges will not increase the incidence of fly-tipping!

I dropped two sheets of plasterboard off at Charlton waste disposal. Both were within size limits quoted above. Was informed the cost to dispose of these items was £12 a sheet. The figure quoted above on this web page is clearly wrong. £4 a sheet is bad enough but to be told it is treble this amount is downright robbery. Absolutely disgusting and will only encourage fly tipping (not by me I hasten to add). I don't blame those working at the site who do a fine job but their lives can't be made any easier by this unscrupulous charging.

I have just finished replacing all of my garden fence panels and will need to hire a van in order to bring to the dump as they obviously won’t fit in my car, I also have 6 concrete posts which again won’t go in my car.
Am I allowed to dump this off in a van and if so what will the charges be please?

Are the charges for items such as these to cover the cost of the ridiculously pointless and expensive hardwood cladding used on the side of the new building?????

Charging people extra for a service that is already paid for through the council tax is absurd .Not only do we the residents of all the UK have to sort out rubbish but have to pay for the privilege of disposing of it .It is a false economy as anyone with half a brain knows these charges are responsible for the increase in fly tipping ,which then has to be cleared up by the council who then have to pay employees to do the work ,which I,m sure costs more than allowing rubble etc to be disposed of at no charge if from your own property . Governments and council are forever telling us of our individual responsibilities regarding waste ,but to charge for items when there is no alternative than to use local council services is to be held ransom .with creeping charges for individual items it is not long before the charges will extend to garden waste and wood ..Councils face up to your responsibilities...It is to dispose of domestic waste not exploit the public for extra funds ...If this continues ,rising costs will become an electoral issue ,the party that offers free disposal would get my vote

I recently took 4 small bags of rubble to the Charlton Waste Depot and was told I had to pay £16. I've lived in Walton since 1970 and am not a builder nor do I run a commercial company. I'm simply a local householder who pays some of the highest council tax in the UK. So why am I being forced to pay what is simply another stealth tax?. I had no idea of these charges and was not even told that one of the four bags would be free of charge. That said, whoever came up with this ingenious way to make us pay for bagging waste in an environmentally efficient way and delivering it to where it can be expertly disposed of could not possibly have considered the idea that it will definitely lead to more fly tipping which will cost the Council ( sorry, the honest tax payer ) much more in the short and long term ). Please before it's too late re-consider this ill conceived policy!!.

(WE CAN ONLY HOPE THAT THE NEW CHARGES WILL NOT INCREASE INCEDENCE OF FLY TIPPING) why say this if you know its gonna happen due to the changes ? don't make sence ? when ever i look up other pages that are linked to this its always error ? why why not make it plan and simple not only are we paying taxes for rubbish to be taken away we are now paying extra to dump extra rubbish... ? i know its gonna fall on deaf ears but never mind...

Please tell me who is responsible for the policy of charging householders for certain items? I would like to be able to complain to them directly.
